What We Learned From Running a Player Development Program for a Top-25 College Football Program

Hanging around a Top-25 college football program changes your perspective on the little things you can do to make a big difference.

Winning

The University of Utah football program has established itself as a perennial contender and national brand under Kyle Whittingham for the past two decades. They won 2009 Sugar Bowl against Alabama and have played in the Rose Bowl two of the last three years. In fact they only have 3 losing seasons in the last 20 years and have been ranked in the Top-25, at some point during the season, EVERY YEAR for the past 11 years.

In 2018, I had a front row seat to the inner workings of this program as I was tasked with running a ‘player development’ program during the offseason for student-athletes on the team. Quite the task.

As we ran the program each week, it became clear that there was an unmistakable attitude that could be felt in the entire building. What was that feeling?

WINNING

When I sat in Kyle’s office for the first time and we discussed the scope of the program, two ideas kept coming to the surface:

  1. How does this help us win games?

  2. How does this help us win the best recruits?

Everything they did, from how the building was decorated, to how the weight room was arranged, to how the player development program was structured, all pointed to one simple goal: How does this help us win?

If the pictures on the wall didn’t create a feeling of winning, it was gone. If the nutrition specialist didn’t maximize their health, they were gone. If our player development program didn’t create a winning formula for off-field learning, we’d be gone.

Hard to argue with the results. They are one of the winningest programs on the field for the past 20 years and recently reported a 96% graduation rate on the team for 2024.

Winning both on and off the field.

A Winner’s Approach

So What? What does this have to do with golf, or junior rankings, or getting recruited?

The lessons we learned from being in that environment shaped many aspects of the TUGR platform. Everything we’ve built is with the focus of helping you win. Win the day, win the practice session, win the course management game, and win the event.

At TUGR, we help answer 3 crucial questions:

  1. Where do I stand? (i.e., where am I ranked and where does my game stack up to my peers)?

  2. How do I improve?

  3. How can I be seen?

As the only technology that has these three areas covered in one place - Rankings, Analytics, and Recruiting - everything we do is meant to give you answers to these questions.

Just like the feeling we felt each time we entered the University of Utah football facilities, our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to create a winning attitude. Win at the little decisions so that you’re prepared to win at the big events.

We still have a few requests outstanding from last week that we are working to get updated. Thanks for the support.
