The Tradition of The Masters is Innovation

Why innovation is at the heart of keeping tradition!

A Tradition of Innovation

When you thinks of Augusta National and The Masters, you undoubtably think of the classic tagline, “A tradition unlike any other.” The Masters is the epitome of Major Championship golf by all measures. Whether you look at TV ratings, online chatter, or any other metric, The Masters is the premier event for the sport.

The Masters is the embodiment of tradition and paying homage to the great history of the game. Everything they do gives a nod to the past. Even the on-course food prices remind you of 30 years ago.

The irony of what makes The Masters great from a tradition standpoint, is amplified in multiples by their relentless innovation of the community, player and fan experience.

To the casual fan, the word ‘innovation’ may not be your first thought when thinking of The Masters, but there is no other body in golf that has embraced progressing the game through innovation like Augusta National. Some of these innovations include:

  • Constant on-course changes and upgrades from their sub-air green complex systems, to strategic tree locations, to tee box renovations, to adapting to the longer ball, and more.

  • Great technology, such as The Masters app which allows you to watch every shot of every player in the field, updated in real time.

  • Influencers like Dude Perfect and others having access to the course to expand the game and bring in a new audience.

  • More golf shots per hour during coverage

  • Women’s Am event

  • The Loop at The Patch

  • Real time shot tracking on the range

While it may sound counterintuitive, what makes The Masters a great ‘traditional’ event, is the unrelenting innovation to the experience they roll out each year.

TUGR - An Innovative Platform

TUGR set out to build a platform that is new and innovative for junior golf. It’s different, by design. We’re doing something that has never been done before - have one platform where you can access accurate rankings, detailed player analytics, and an advanced recruiting portal for coaches to help them make better decisions.

And this is just the beginning! This is TUGR 1.0 and we can’t wait to debut TUGR 2.0 and beyond over the coming months and years.

Golf is a highly fragmented sport and industry. It’s unique when compared to all other sports. At the professional level, you have a handful of different governing bodies that guide the game in some way, shape or form. At the Amateur and Junior levels, golf becomes highly local and regional.

At all levels, some organizations embrace innovation while others shy away from it. To each their own, but The Masters is a great example of how an organization can balance tradition and innovation to create an incredible experience. At TUGR, we use their example as the framework for how we can respect tradition while innovating forward. Welcome to the future!
