PGA Championship Strokes Gained Recap

No surprise as to which part of the game led the way!

SG Approach Wins Again

The PGA Championship was held this past weekend with the undisputed #1 player in the world taking the win. Once again, he lapped the field posting a scorching -11 over four days and beating his nearest competitor by 5 shots.

I’m going to sound like a broken record, but the data is undeniable and every junior golfer and parent should understand which part of the game is the most important.

Let’s break down the numbers for the Strokes Gained categories. There were 36 players who finished Even par or better - what percentage of them had positive strokes-gained in each of these categories:

  • SG Approach: 89%

  • SG Around-the-Green: 83%

  • SG Putting: 72%

  • SG Off-the-Tee: 72%

Scottie didn’t crack the Top-30 in SG Putting, but was Top-11 in both SG Approach and SG Around-the-Green. The fascinating case study of Bryson DeChambeau showed itself again, with the same pattern manifesting from The Masters. He dominated most parts of the game, including being 2nd in the field in SG Off-the-Tee, but finished 72nd in SG Approach for the week.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again. The old saying, “Drive for show and putt for dough” is good, but a better phrase is, “Drive for show and approach for dough.” All of the numbers, week-in and week-out confirm that iron play is the most important component of the game.

Reminders and Opportunities

A few reminders and opportunities:

  • The Otter Creek Championship: We are proud to partner with the Otter Creek Championship to promote their 1-day qualifier giving professional and amateur women a chance to play in an LPGA Epson Tour event. Reach out to head professional Andrew Weisheit if you want more information at [email protected]

  • Pro Benchmarks: In honor of the PGA Championship, be sure and compare your stats to the pros. Every junior on the analytics platform can set their benchmark to the top pros in the world to see how your game stacks up

  • Continued Excellence in Ranking:

    • We are proud to be one of the largest ranking databases of junior golfers. Because we use a relative strokes methodology, we can rank countless tournaments that would otherwise go unranked by other systems. We recently onboarded one of the largest junior tours in the nation.

    • On average, TUGR Junior ranks 20-30% more events and players than other systems. More events captured mean more players ranked, which means you can have confidence in knowing where you stack up relative to the other juniors int he country.

Happy Memorial Day weekend. Last Sunday I met a WWII vet in an elevator and took the chance to say, ‘thank you.’ There are not many of them left.
